GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCSC) - Summer is just around the corner and Goose Creek residents will soon have the opportunity to relax at the pool.
The City of Goose Creek’s pool is set to open Saturday, May 25 and city officials are working to get the word out. Because the pool sits in a neighborhood, City officials believe that many people do not realize that the pool is owned by the City and is completely open to the public. They want to make sure the community knows about this amenity and that it is available to them.
City of Goose Creek Marketing, Branding and Design Assistant Adam Kelly says that with the recent expansion of the nearby Crowfield Golf Club, a new restaurant and mini golf course coming to the area, they are anticipating an uptick in use of City amenities, including the pool, this year.
“It’s nice for us to have just another location for people to go to in a more quiet setting,” he said. “A lot of people don’t understand that this is a city-owned and operated area. So, we’re always encouraging people. If you don’t play pickleball, there are tennis courts here; if you don’t enjoy a splash pad you can also take your kids here and swim instead.”
To encourage more guests to come out, they plan on hosting different gatherings like movie nights and arts and crafts events. They will also be hosting an opening weekend party with games, food trucks and floats in hopes of bringing more attention and use to the pool. The event will be held May 25 from noon to 2 p.m. It will be free and open to anyone interested in attending.
Kelly said that they are hoping with these events that more people will utilize the pool as well as the many other recreational amenities in the area.
“I think our main goal is to get more residents that are outside of Crowfield. One of our issues that we’ve had is encouraging and educating people outside of this neighborhood that this is city owned and operated. So, we are always trying to push and increase those numbers,” Kelly said.
After opening weekend, the Goose Creek pool will be open Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the exception of a few dates for swim meets. More information can be found on the City’s Facebook page or their recreation website. A day pass for the pool will be $3, but season passes can be purchased at the Recreation Center located at 519A North Goose Creek Blvd. Season passes are available for $50 for residents of the City and $100 for non-residents. Some form of proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, rental agreement or utility bill, will be required.
From June to August, pool rentals will be available on Friday, Saturday and Sundays from 7 to 10 p.m. for $275. A $100 security deposit will be required as well as some proof of residency. Swim lessons and tennis lessons are also available through the recreation center.
The City pool is located at 300 Hamlet Circle.

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. (WCSC) - Residents of Goose Creek will soon have the opportunity to enjoy concerts, events and entertainment right from their city.
The Joseph S. Daning Amphitheatre will serve as an entertainment venue right behind Goose Creek City Hall. This project has been in the works for about three years now and construction began in May 2023. The project is just under $4 million and is on track for both budget and timeline. It will officially open on Labor Day.
The amphitheater will hold a variety of different events, national shows and concerts. The city is already planning for three major shows after the grand opening in September. They are anticipating one in September, one in October and one in November and plan to make all three of these free for the public to attend.
Recreation Director for the City of Goose Creek Crystal Reed says that this is what the city needs and it will provide a great benefit to the community.
“I think the goal is to bring entertainment and opportunities to our residents, so they don’t have to travel outside of city limits to get what they need. This will give us opportunities for neighbors to get to know each other and congregate and celebrate in their city,” Reed says.
When no events are happening, the venue will serve as a park for residents to enjoy all the time with the opportunity to enjoy lunch from the food trucks. The amphitheater will be able to seat about 800 people and there will be plenty of overflow room on the nearby lawns.
This amphitheater is named after former South Carolina Representative Joe Danning, who served as a Council member for the City for over 20 years and helped secure $1.5 million of state funding for this project. The remainder of the project was funded by ARPA funding.
The majority of the project is completed. The final steps are to finish the stage, add an area for the food trucks and add the grass. The city also recently hired an arts and entertainment coordinator who has been able to help them prepare for the opening.
The location of the complex plays a major factor as it is central to the city and will provide residents with the opportunity to walk to it using nearby trails. Reed says this is a priority of the city as they are growing and expanding.
“In this complex the goal really is to make our city more walkable. So, we have the rec complex here. We’ve got our municipal center. And so, as growth comes, we want people to be able to spend less time in their cars and more time getting to things in the city of Goose Creek. So, the goal is to add more entertainment, more recreation opportunities within the city. And so that’s what this will do for us,” she says.
Reed says she is excited to see what comes of this new addition to the city. She says they want to accommodate the community through the growth of the area.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - Families with students on spring break might be looking for something to do. In this Lowcountry city, they can now go on a wild goose chase – literally.
Last year, the City of Goose Creek Recreation Department partnered with the Goose Creek Artists Guild to start the City’s “Adopt a Goose” Program. Since then, 21 different local businesses in Goose Creek have adopted their very own statues.
Each business got creative direction to work with members of the artist guild to design unique and individualized goose statues that will then make their nests with their owners.
To both push this initiative of supporting local artists and shine spotlights on local businesses, the City created a scavenger hunt to find these four-and-a-half-foot tall statues.
Starting Saturday, Goose Creek residents can grab a map and start snapping pictures with each goose statue and try to find them all. Officials say participants can share those pictures with the City by tagging them @cityofgoosecreek and @cityofgoosecreekrecreation on Instagram or at the City of Goose Creek and Goose Creek Recreation Facebook pages using the hashtags #FollowTheFlock and #GCGooseChase.

This isn’t all, though. Officials have prepared an additional incentive for students on spring break all week.
Starting Monday and going through Friday, three random goose statues will “lay” a golden egg. Inside are prizes such as gifts and coupons from local businesses.

Destination districts are a part of the city’s long-term vision of giving Goose Creek a more downtown feel in different areas by offering people walkable areas where they can shop and eat.
Other properties that are part of the destination district include the Uptown project at Carnes Crossroads. The Uptown development will contain more than 100,000 square feet of commercial buildings — including restaurants, retail and flex space.
The project will also have public green space to be programmed by the city once construction is complete. There is property on Redbank Road that is a part of the plan as well.
The recently zoned property at 523 N. Goose Creek Boulevard sits next to Goose Creek’s municipal building and backs up to the city’s recreation complex.
Also near the spot is a $4 million amphitheater being constructed near the existing recreation complex and the lake behind city hall. The new facility will include an outside basketball court, a food truck area and restrooms.
Goose Creek’s population is growing and young, and the city wants to give those residents something to do and somewhere to do it. Currently the median age is 33 years old. Data shows the annual median household income at $80,000 per year. Also, according to the city, 60% of households make more than $60,000 per year.
This latest land will be a part of the Central Creek destination district, which, according to council member Melissa Enos, will be more family oriented.
“It’s from the park down to the part where the amphitheater is," Enos said. "So, from city hall down to Central Creek Park is a village node also."
According to the Goose Creek Rural Fire Department report, the first unit arrived on the scene at 2 a.m., reporting a significant fire on the first floor of the middle unit of a row of townhomes. Crews initiated a fire attack. Two residents had already jumped from the second-floor windows before the first fire department units arrived.
The two injured victims were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
A victim was located on the second floor and removed. They were declared dead on the scene. After the fire was under control, a second deceased victim was located on the second floor.
Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell identified the deceased as Kenia Stefany Lazo Castro, 24, and Milthon M. Lazo Ordonez, 35.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was requested to conduct the fire investigation. The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office also responded to assist with the investigation.
The fire remains under investigation.
The incident was in the unincorporated area of Goose Creek, and the Joint Base Charleston Fire Department, Hanahan Fire Department, C & B Fire Department and Caromi Fire Department provided aid.
In addition to the law enforcement agencies, others assisting with the incident include South Carolina State Fire, Berkeley County Emergency Management, American Red Cross, Berkeley Electric Cooperative and the Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team.
